Frequently Asked Questions
Q: If I change my device or computer, can I get these charts again on the replacement hardware?
A: Each chart purchase comes with two subscriptions for downloading and updating chart files for two target devices or computers. Assuming at least one chart subscription is within licensed time range, contact firstname.lastname@example.org for advice on how to get a fresh new download to a replacement device or computer. There is no method of making a device-to-device direct transfer of chart files, copying and pasting files between computers will fail, and restoring from an external backup drive or cloud backup service will not be successful either. A fresh download of chart files from the Fugawi.com service is the only effective means of getting charts on the next device / computer.
Q: What happens at the end of the subscription? May I continue to use the charts?
A: After a 365 day subscription concludes, all charts you have downloaded remain accessible as normal, no charts disappear. However, when the subscription ends you are no longer able to download chart updates with revised navigation data, and no longer able to re-download chart files in case of a device memory reset or drive re-format. Renew the subscription if you wish on your Fugawi.com account's My Products page.
Q: Do the chart files get delivered by web URL download link or shipped out on DVD disc?
A: No, the one and only way of getting the charts is from within the compatible software; see the Features web page of this product. As for charts on CD or DVD disc is rapidly becoming like asking for data on 1980s 5.25 inch floppy discs or ancient Egyptian papyrus scrolls. Just dive into the instructions and you will surely figure out how to download the charts. We are standing by during weekdays at email@example.com if you need help with potential error messages, confusion over menu options, etc.
Q: Can I use these charts on other software not specifically listed as compatible?
A: No. Fugawi.com's chart download service targets particular software designed for these chart downloads.
Q: Is always-on Internet needed to use these charts?
A: After downloading singlet raster charts, no further Internet connection is required; the chart file exist independently within the navigation software on your computer / device. Quilted charts, however, need an Internet connection to fetch a given chart area and scale when viewed for the first time.
Q: How does GPS positioning data work with the software and charts?
A: To see your boat's position on the chart in real-time some kind of GPS data source is needed whether that be a USB plug-in GPS for a computer, or a Bluetooth wireless GPS for a tablet, or similar GPS hardware alternatives. If you are not sure if your computer or device has GPS, download any free GPS location aware software and see if they respond to your present position; better yet, study the hardware specifications of your particular model of computer / device. By the way, there is no required relationship between Internet access (ex. via Wi-Fi or cellular networks) and GPS, though often the best Assisted-GPS solutions leverage both actual GPS satellite data as well as trianglulation based position data from cell towers, Wi-Fi Hotspots, and so on.
Q: How do I know which individual chart to pull up as I approach the edge of a presently navigated chart?
A: Some software has quilted chart features which allow seamless access of the charts at all scales -- though this requires a persistent Internet connection while downloading quilted charts at a given scale for the first time (ex. iNavX offers a chart list option for Quilted Charts — tap it and then zoom in to the broad scale outline of the chart collection's boundaries). Other software may not have reliable auto-load adjacent chart functions. If necesary, return to the chart list and choose the next chart based on the geographic names or chart numbers; or view a large scale overview chart that includes outlines of inset charts of a smaller scale that may be selectable for viewing.
Q: If a chart list is refreshed (i.e. old charts deleted in preparation for downloading new chart files) do all my waypoints and routes and tracks get deleted too?
A: Waypoints, routes, and tracks are a different kind of data that "floats" over any type of chart of a given area, and such data resides in memory quite separate from chart files. So, no, when you get rid of a chart this has zero affect on waypoints, routes, and tracks. This includes any specialized Blue Latitude data you may have imported in the past.
Q: Can I move waypoints and routes placed on a chart between different software such as Fugawi Marine 5, iNavX, and others?
A: Yes. Your Fugawi.com account includes Cloud storage. Software such as iNavX or Fugawi Marine 5 has import and export options that leverage Fugawi.com storage. You may also email exported GPX files between computers / devices and then use saved email attachments as file targets for importing into various software.
